About Us

MISSION STATEMENT
WHO: Hartford Youth Scholars is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works with Hartford students – beginning when they are in middle school – and helps them get “to and through” college.

WHAT: Our mission is to give students from Hartford the opportunity to change their lives through education.

HOW: Hartford Youth Scholars (HYS) helps highly motivated Hartford students gain access to and graduate from best-fit high schools and colleges. The organization provides Scholars and their families with academic and mentoring support for 10 or more years, beginning the summer before Scholars enter 7th grade and continuing through college graduation.

We prepare our Scholars to successfully complete a four-year college degree by offering them access to exceptional educational opportunities and providing them with ongoing, comprehensive supports.

WHY: We envision these Scholars attaining college degrees and then returning to work and live in Hartford, thereby inspiring and helping to cultivate similar achievements in younger Hartford students.
INVESTED IN OUR COMMUNITY

HYS works with motivated students from Hartford - beginning when they are in middle school - for 10 or more years, until they have earned a college degree. At HYS we know that gaining admission to college is only the first step. We work with each Scholar and their family individually, helping them to face and overcome any obstacle that presents itself on the way to college graduation.

Our greatest recruitment tool today is word of mouth. Family members, friends and neighbors see what HYS has done for children in their Hartford neighborhoods & classrooms and want the same for their own children.

HYS IS CREATING A CULTURE OF COLLEGE-GOING EXPECTANCY IN HARTFORD NEIGHBORHOODS, THUS CHANGING THE CITY THAT THESE KIDS LOVE AND CALL HOME.

We are helping these young students to uncover and develop their passion and potential – and then stepping aside to guide them as they unleash that potential in the world. Why?
Because there is no better investment in our communities’ tomorrow than to encourage and support young people today.
HOW TO APPLY
________________________

Hartford Youth Scholars scans the city every year, looking for 30 students who are in the 6th grade and who possess the qualities that will make them great Scholars. We are looking for students who love to learn, have a strong sense of themselves, and who are willing to work hard to achieve goals.

If you are a parent, teacher, or anyone who knows of students who meet these criteria, please visit our Admissions page.

We recruit year-round; applications are typically accepted between Labor Day and mid-March each year, with decisions being made in May.

HISTORY

Launched in 2005, HYS was originally created to be a Scholarship Program, a directive from the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission Report that recommended more students attend private school given these schools' impressive college placement records of success.

RESULTS
____________________
Hartford Youth Scholars’ program at The Collegiate Academy provides the training and support necessary to ensure that Scholars beat the odds of minority and low-income students for academic attainment and achievement.

Scholars rise to the rigors of The Academy’s curriculum and sacrifice free time to increase their academic opportunities. HYS faculty and staff are beside them every step of the way, providing encouragement and support.

Results have exceeded even our (initial) expectations. Today we know that the sky isn't the limit for these young people; they are not limited to the sky. Our Scholars are teaching us to expect more as they redefine what "limit" means for them.
