Who Should Nominate a Student?

Hartford Youth Scholars looks to identify students who will truly benefit and excel at The Collegiate Academy. Although staff members visit numerous schools to share information about the HYS program, there are still many talented students who have not heard about us. We rely on the nominations of teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, principals, and community leaders - those who have direct exposure to students and families - to help us recognize students with potential.

Nominated students will receive a Hartford Youth Scholars information packet and an invitation to one of our Family Information Meetings. Additionally, nominees will receive an application for admission and details on how to apply. An application to The Collegiate Academy includes family and student questionnaires, student essays, teacher recommendations, school transcripts, and The Collegiate Academy Exam.

We also invite teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, principals, and community leaders to biannual information sessions where they can learn more about the program and get up-to-date information that they can share with students and their families. One event is hosted in February (Open House) and the other during the summer (Visiting Day).

Please check our calendar for dates.

Who should you nominate?

Ideal student candidates are those who have high potential and could benefit the most from an intensive academic program. Nominees must be Hartford residents who are currently in 6th grade.

The Collegiate Academy evaluates applicants based on criteria including:

WRITING SKILLS

ORAL COMMUNICATION

READING COMPREHENSION

CRITICAL THINKING

STUDY/ORGANIZATIONAL  SKILLS

MUST BE A HARTFORD RESIDENT

MOTIVATION & ACADEMIC POTENTIAL

We search for hard-working students who will put in the extra effort it takes to succeed not only at The Collegiate Academy, but also at partner independent schools. Generally, Scholars earn A’s and B’s (though this should not be the sole consideration in nominating), demonstrate positive effort, and participate in their school and community. Scholars are eager to learn, enjoy being academically challenged, and have college as a goal.

LACK OF ACCESS

This program is not designed for students who have their own means of access to college-preparatory independent schools. The Collegiate Academy provides students unique access to educational opportunities, and we equip students with the academic skills and support necessary to become viable candidates for these schools.

FAMILY SUPPORT

The Collegiate Academy requires family commitment, and active and involved parents/guardians. We are looking for families who will support their Scholar throughout the program, from providing transportation to creating a quiet study space at home.
