FAQ

No. The Collegiate Academy is a 26-month program of extracurricular classes, held on Trinity College's campus during the summer and on Saturdays during the school year. Scholars attend Collegiate Academy classes while also attending their "regular" schools. All Hartford residents in the sixth grade are eligible to apply.

Interested students and families are encouraged to call Hartford Youth Scholars directly at 860.297.5116 to request more information and an application. HYS also welcomes student nominations (link) from teachers, principals, guidance counselors, and other school administrators. A nomination is HYS’s way of identifying motivated students who would benefit from the Collegiate Academy in preparing for middle school, high school and, most importantly, college. Nominated students will receive an information packet and an invitation to a Family Information Meeting, but are not guaranteed admittance to the program. Nominations are due to HYS by mid- December.

ADMISSIONS

HYS is looking for students who will truly benefit and excel at The Collegiate Academy . Final decisions are made based on many admission components. We are looking for students who enjoy learning and challenging themselves; families and students who are committed to making The Collegiate Academy  a priority; and those who otherwise would not have access to the opportunities provided by our program.

  • Scholars attend the schools that are the best fit for them, whether that be private schools or excellent magnet, charter, and public schools. Our staff works closely with Scholars and their families to review placement options and to select schools that best meet each Scholar's needs, desires, and ability.
  • Our Scholars attend some of the most prestigious schools in the country. For a complete list of partner schools click here. Link to partner schools

Placement staff assists families in every step of investigating school choices, making decisions, applying to the finest private schools, and obtaining financial aid.

Private schools do charge tuition annually, and they also award financial aid according to family need. HYS works with families to apply for financial aid. Most families receive some form of financial aid and many receive generous financial aid packages. However, all families are asked to contribute some amount of money toward tuition.

No, Hartford Youth Scholars does not provide scholarships. HYS assists Scholars and families in the financial aid process. All HYS placement schools offer need-based financial aid and some provide merit-based assistance. Most Scholars receive financial assistance from placement schools, and many receive generous financial aid packages.

Once Scholars complete the Collegiate Academy and are enrolled in high school, a dedicated staff member stays in regular contact with each Scholar. HYS helps all Scholars who have completed the Collegiate Academy to excel academically in high school, participate in enriching extracurricular activities, and go on to succeed in and graduate from college.
