The Collegiate Academy is Hartford Youth Scholars' 26-month academic enrichment program, serving middle school students from Hartford.

The Collegiate Academy (TCA) is a community of motivated, compassionate, responsible, and hard-working Scholars from Hartford who are committed to becoming competitive applicants for admission into, and success at, some of the area’s top high schools, including private,  public, magnet, and charter schools.

HYS recruits highly motivated 6th graders from Hartford schools. Scholars are selected based on a variety of personal and academic qualities.

Our goal is to reinforce, enrich, and expand our Scholars’ education. Scholars are provided the meaningful opportunities, comprehensive resources, and accountability that teaches and encourages them to become mature and industrious adolescents.

To this end, Scholars will enjoy an ambitious experience – one that is not only personally rewarding, intellectually challenging, and academically stimulating, but that also helps Scholars develop the leadership skills and ethical sensibilities necessary for their success.

Collegiate Academy Scholars are putting in time and dedication today and they are making a long-term commitment to continue to do so. HYS Scholars know that education changes lives and they know that gaining admission to college isn't going to further their education; they know that admission is their opportunity to participate in their own education and earn a college degree.

HARTFORD YOUTH SCHOLARS' PROGRAM:

The Collegiate Academy

SUMMER SESSION

The Collegiate Academy's (TCA) summer sessions are intense, five-week sessions during which classes meet five days a week from 8AM-4PM.

For the three summers following their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade school years, Scholars engage in our academic program. TCA programming exceeds the difficulty found at most public schools. Scholars are broken into teams to facilitate small classes, one-on-one instructor attention, academic camaraderie and maximum engagement in learning. The intensive academic schedule at TCA ensures that students build a solid foundation in math, literature, writing, history, science and Spanish; improve their public-speaking, time-management, and research skills; and become fully prepared for the challenges of academic excellence in public and private high schools.

FALL AND SPRING SESSIONS

Following the summer session, Scholars return for fall session of The Collegiate Academy, (TCA) which begins with fall Academy orientation. Scholars attend their regular 7th/8th grade classes at their area schools and then come to TCA on Saturdays from 9:00AM -3:00 PM. The Saturday coursework is focused on SSAT test preparation and study skills. Spring session follows the same schedule, but programming shifts to personal development and higher level math and literature courses in preparation for high school for students in the 8th grade.

Attendance, excell ent behavior, and completed homework are required. Scholars who display inappropriate behavior are issued work habit and behavior slips. If a Scholar gets a homework or behavior slip, he or she must meet with his/her advisor and a follow-up discussion with the family is required.

Why The Collegiate Academy?

“The Collegiate Academy provides supplemental educational support for Hartford students and their families. As a community based organization we provide a holistic approach to education for our Scholars.

Our Scholars take classes on the campus of Trinity College and are exposed to a wide curriculum that covers middle and high school classes as well as university course content. We supplement our students’ education in Math, Science, Literature, History, and Spanish by providing small classrooms, dedicated faculty, and exposure to academic content that students may not receive at their home institutions.

Through our Beyond The Books initiatives we also take our students on field trips to expand their cultural horizons. We approach education holistically and want our Scholars to be have access to museums, theater, creative workshops, outdoor activities, and sporting events in the greater Hartford area.

The HYS 10-year commitment is to get our Scholars to and through college. The Collegiate Academy is the beginning of this 10-year commitment as we prepare our students to have a scholarly commitment to their education and a deep love for their intellectual pursuits.”
