Secondary Education Guidance
In the month of August, following completion of 7th grade, Scholars and parents visit private schools as a group with HYS. Many parents are unfamiliar with private schools and are therefore anxious about sending their child away to board. These field trips introduce parents to private schools as safe places that can provide their children with the education and opportunity of a lifetime.
Parents and Scholars also meet with HYS staff to discuss placement options and work together to select schools that best meet Scholars’ needs, desires, and ability. Each Scholar is given a list of 3-4 schools with which to arrange visits and interviews and our staff closely monitors this process to assist in any way possible.
In addition to the private school placement process an equal number of students pursue public school options and enter lotteries for charter, magnet schools and open choice. HYS' primary goal is to find the school that is the best fit for each of our Scholars and their families.
