“Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
As early as 6th grade, Hartford Youth Scholars (HYS) make a commitment to academic excellence. They maturely seek an opportunity to change the tide for their family, fueled by the belief that “education changes everything”. It is rare to find a child who is willing to sacrifice as these Scholars do, in order to quench an unsettled academic thirst. Strong character, resilience, and intellectual curiosity are things that Scholars pride themselves on.
The HYS staff is committed to helping each Scholar be his or her academic best by providing him or her with the rigor and support necessary to thrive in any environment. We aim for Scholars to think critically, to advocate for themselves, and work hard to realize their personal and academic goals.
At The Steppingstone Academy Hartford, the Scholars’ primary academic program, we take a holistic liberal arts approach to learning. With a curriculum modeled after the rigors of independent high schools in the northeast, we purposefully strive to set high expectations for Scholars and to provide the necessary guidance and skill set to meet these goals.
Not only do we spend time preparing Scholars, but we are also equally committed to supporting them through college completion. Steppingstone Scholars know that our staff is only a phone call away. HYS staff truly cares about each Scholar in the program. Due to our small cohort size, we are able to build close relationships with each Scholar and his or her family. The services HYS provides are intended to help each Scholar transition and thrive, not only academically, but also socially. Scholars benefit from academic monitoring, extra-curricular involvement, and college guidance.
Schools that partner with HYS receive students that have been tried and tested in a challenging academic environment, and who are poised to be leaders within their community. Partnership provides the opportunity to work with students of high character and resilience, plus the benefits of a quality staff. HYS staff believes in Scholars’ ability to perform and is here to help. After going through a selective admissions process and 26 months of intensive academic preparation, we are confident that we are cultivating the best that Hartford has to offer!
