Frequently Asked Questions

The Steppingstone Academy Hartford is a 26-month educational enrichment program, for middle school students provided by Hartford Youth Scholars (HYS). This community of motivated, hard working Hartford students is committed to becoming competitive and deserving applicants for admission into some of the nation’s top independent, magnet, and charter high schools.
All Hartford residents in the sixth grade are eligible to apply. Students need not be at the top of their class to gain admittance, but must demonstrate a commitment to learning, working hard, and exploring new experiences, as well as a willingness to participate in a dynamic community. Accepted students tend to earn A’s, B’s, and are eager to prepare for a more rigorous academic environment.
Interested students and families are encouraged to call Hartford Youth Scholars directly at 860.297.5116 to request more information and an application. HYS also welcomes student nominations (link) from teachers, principals, guidance counselors, and other school administrators. A nomination is HYS’s way of identifying motivated students who would benefit from the guidance of The Steppingstone Academy Hartford in preparing for middle school, high school, and most importantly, college. Nominated students will receive an information packet and an invitation to a Family Information Meeting, but are not guaranteed admittance to the program. Nominations are due to HYS by mid- December.

Independent schools are privately funded and do charge tuition annually. Independent schools award financial aid according to family need. Hartford Youth Scholars works with families to apply for financial aid. Most families receive some form of financial aid and many receive generous financial aid packages. However, all families are asked to contribute some amount of money toward tuition.
HYS does not provide scholarships. HYS assists students and families in the financial aid process for independent schools. All HYS placement schools offer need-based financial aid and some provide merit-based assistance. Most Scholars receive financial assistance from placement schools, and many receive generous financial aid packages.
Once Scholars complete the Academy and are enrolled in secondary school, a dedicated staff member stays in contact and visits each Scholar three times during the year, wherever his or her school is located.
